FAQ - Huts
-
How do I book a hut?
There is no booking system except for a few managed by NPWS. It gets very busy during long weekends and the huts are there for emergency accomodation only so always carry your tent. You must share the hut with anyone else that may come along, Always carry a tent in case you can't find a hut or it is damaged.
-
Which huts can be booked?
Currango Homestead - Tantangra Dam Wolgal Hut - Kiandra- Burnt down in 2020 fires Yarrangobilly Caves House All can be booked through the NPWS Tumut Visitors Centre: The Old Butter Factory, Adelong Road, Tumut, NSW 2720 (02) 6947 1849 Link to NPWS Accommodation website
-
Who can use the huts?
Absolutely everyone - you are welcome, provided that you respect the space and leave it as you found it, or even cleaner! And you must share the hut and fireplace with anyone else who arrives. If you do not like rats you may prefer to sleep in your tent.
-
What facilities are there?
Often none. Most have a small water hole or stream nearby. Most have a stove for heating and a bush saw for cutting wood. Most have a broom for cleaning up. Many have a toilet a short walk away, take your own toilet paper.
-
Where can I get water?
Most huts have a small stream nearby. A collapsable container is handy to carry water back to the hut. Some huts have buckets. In popular areas and during low water flow periods, you should treat the water if you can't boil it for drinking.
-
Can I light a fire in them?
Yes, in stoves and fireplaces, except during Park or Total Fire Bans, check with NPWS before leaving home. Keep fires small to prevent the chimney timbers from catching alight. Of course you will fully extinguish any fire with water before you leave the hut. During Total Fire Bans, the State Government regulations state that because you do not have a ready source of running water in the hut, you cannot use camping stoves with a naked flame.
-
May I collect firewood?
Yes, but don't go overboard, Only use dead wood - green wood is alive and growing, and does not burn easily, Avoid leaving unsightly branch stumps which might spoil the view from the hut, Only cut what you will burn during your stay, Leave some wood behind for the next visitors, in case they arrive in bad weather, enough for one night and a bit more for drying wet logs if necessary. Having to cut your own wood is the best form of wood fuel conservation. Only leave a small bundle of kindling and, of the remainder, nothing else less than 2" diameter, please use the wood box if there is one. Please do not leave huge piles of fine kindling with leaves still on them in the hut!
-
Where can I find the information about visiting the huts?
The Hut Visitor code has lots of information, see here. The Australian Alps National Parks website also a very good guide.
-
Where can I get mobile phone reception?
The more modern phones can get reception over a lot of the park, on top of the higher peaks is good.
FAQ - KHA
-
What skills do I need that could be useful?
If you have special trade skills, especially heritage skills, we would love to hear from you!
Heritage
The huts of the Kosciuszko National Park and Namadgi National Park are of national heritage significance. They tell the story of the region’s indigenous people, European settlers, miners, stockmen, prospectors, anglers, skiers and hydro-electric industry.
As such, our volunteers are encouraged to understand and respect the heritage value of huts and homesteads, and to use the best available heritage knowledge, skills and standards in their preservation.
The huts are listed heritage assets and KHA undertakes all work in accordance with the Burra Charter, the relevant conservation plans, and directions from the parks’ authorities. We conserve what was done by the original builders - we do not improve, modernise, or introduce unsympathetic materials.
Safety skills
NPWS and ACT Parks and Conservation Services takes the health and safety of members involved in our work parties seriously and actively manages the risks.
Working in mountainous areas involves a number of risks including fast-changing weather, remoteness and unreliable phone signal.
In both jurisdictions where construction works are involved:
- all participants are required to have a white card
- there is to be at least one, preferably two, current trained first aid officers on the site
For workparties that do not involve construction works (e.g. inspections, clean ups, minor repairs, oiling, and painting)
- NSW NPWS strongly prefers at least one person on the workparty to have a white card
- Both jurisdictions prefer at least one person to have current first aid training
The white card is a nationally recognised qualification in construction site work health and safety, and is offered by several registered training organisations (RTOs), including via online delivery.
KHA reimburses members for their white card and first aid training provided they have obtained prior approval.
-
How do I get a website login/password?
Logins are for members only. You will be sent details when your membership has been processed. If you are already a member and do not know your login details, try the "Forgot Username" or "Forgot Password" button. If you do not receive email, tell the webmaster. This has probably occured because you registered with an old password you don't use any more or we do not have a valid email address for you.
-
I have lost my password and/or user name.
You can have the system automatically reset your password by clicking on the "Forgot Login" text under the Login button. This will generate an automatic email to you with a new password. If you do not receive the email, tell the webmaster. This has probably occured because you registered with an old password you don't use any more or we do not have a valid email address for you.
-
How do I change my password when logged in?
You can change most profile entries such as password, postal address or phone number from here. Go to MEMBERS AREA - My Details. Place your mouse pointer over the Edit button just above where your profile picture is see screenshot on the right --> Then click Update your Profile On the Contact Details tab, in the empty box labelled password, type your new password, and type the same password in the Verify Password box, then scroll down to the bottom and click Update. This will overwrite your old password.
-
I want to renew my membership, but I cannot login in.
If your membership has expired by more than two months, you are prevented from loggin in to the website. Please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and ask to be enabled so that you can renew. As membership is due in July, you will be blocked from September on.
-
I would like to offer to help in some way
Email us immediately and we will give you a job! Turn up at an AGM in May and introduce yourself. KHA is run entirely by unpaid volunteers with full-time day jobs and families. Many current committee members have been actively involved for well over a decade. The committee are particularly concerned about succession planning; who will take over the running of the organisation in the future? Any little bit helps, no job is too small...

How to bookmark the KHA website homepage
If you are typing 'KHA', 'khuts.org' or 'kha.org.au' into a box at the top of your browser, you're probably making a Google or Bing search, not telling your browser to open our home page. If you get a list of sites rather than the KHA hompage, then you are doing a web search, not telling your browser to open the KHA home page: e.g. kha bing search kha bing search kha google search kha google search Google and Bing do not put the KHA homepage at the top of the list of results because Google wants KHA to pay them to make that happen. While work is also being undertaken to improve web search results so that the KHA home page is among the results, there may be a better solution. The KHA volunteer Admin Team suggests you create a browser bookmark for the KHA website. The KHA full web address or Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is: https://khuts.org It's easy, just follow these steps for whichever browser you are using: Internet Explorer (Microsoft Window); Safari (Apple Mac), or you may be using a Firefox or a Chrome browser. Step 1. Make sure your bookmarks are displayed, click on the link below and select your browser
-
How to show the bookmarks or Favourites Bar
Step 2. Add the KHA homepage to the bookmarks bar, click on the link below and select your browser How to create an internet favourite or bookmark You must type in the KHA homepage address exactly as below: https://khuts.org Once you set up a bookmark you can just click that rather than make a Google search.
This list is for huts that are in the Kosciuszko National Park. Huts in other National Parks, states and on private land can be found here.
The list is being updated by Barbara Seymour in 2015.
